Case Study: New Hall School, Learn-to-Ride Centre

Stable Block at New Hall School Essex

We were recently awarded the job of building a brand new equestrian facility for New Hall School, Chelmsford, Essex, for their Learn-to-Ride Centre.

Officially launched at their Open Day on 3rd May 2025, the new Learn-to-Ride Centre allows New Hall to support every rider from Beginner to National Competitor. It enables them to start riding lessons on site and offer the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport, a vocational qualification in which students can offer riding for one of the performance elements.

The new facilities include;

30m x 50m Manège with a Martin Collins Clopf fibre surface and

Stable Block comprising of 4 No Stables, Hay Barn, Tack Room & Wash Bay

Alongside the two, state-of-the-art Equestrian Riding Simulators, one focusing on Dressage with advanced capabilities and the other, an Eventing Simulator which supports Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country, the Learn-to-Ride Centre offers exceptional facilities, and is situated in an absolutely stunning setting.

Campion Equestrian Construction are proud to have been involved in a project which will promote and encourage riding at the School for many years to come.

Photos and a Demo Video of the Learn-to-Ride Centre project are in the Gallery section of our website, click on the link here

Essex Young Farmers Show, Chelmsford, Essex, 2025

Dressage Demo Essex Young Farmers Show

The Show: We love visiting this Show! This year was our third year of visiting and it just gets bigger and better every year. There is so much to see and do: Livestock, Equestrian, Horticulture, Rural Crafts & Shopping and Trade Stands.

There are numerous displays to watch in the Show Rings, including the Motorcycle Display Team, Carriage Driving Demo, Lawn Mower Racing and Tug of War. We particularly enjoyed watching the Essex Police Dog Section display with the Police Dogs catching Colin the Criminal!

Our Sponsored Rider: The highlight of our day was watching our Sponsored Rider, Rachel Skeffington and the lovely Rosie, doing the Dressage to Music Demo in the Equine Ring. Rachel and Rosie did an amazing Demo, they make us so proud to be their Sponsor.

Our Customer: We popped in to our Customer, New Hall School’s Stand, which was showcasing the Equestrian facilities they have at the School.

In addition to the brand new 30m x 50m Manège we have recently installed for them and the new Stable Block, which is being erected this week. They also have two Equestrian Simulators, one of which was on their Stand for Show visitors to try.

Henry: Henry, our 7 month old Golden Retriever puppy came with us to the Show. He was a really good boy and thoroughly enjoyed himself. He experienced lots of new sights and sounds and met loads of new four legged friends (including Rosie after the Dressage Demo) ate his first Ice Cream and then slept in the car all the way home!

Save the Date: We are looking forward to next years’ Show on Sunday 17th May 2026!

Equestrian Concrete Bases

Concrete Base for Stable

We’re a little bit proud of our Concrete bases!

So when we’re on site and a new Stable Block or American Barn is erected, we hear “oooh, it’s amazing”, “wow, that’s stunning”!

Err, hold on a second, what about the all important concrete base that “amazing” stable block or “stunning” American Barn is sitting on?!

The Concrete Base is often, (actually, always!) overlooked, yet it’s such an important part of the overall build.

So yes, we do get a little offended, but I guess we’re kind of used to it now!

Quality

We can lay a quality concrete base for your Stable Block or American Barn.

We use a RC35 Concrete Mix with added fibres for strength and a urine resistant additive.

We use K Forms as an expansion joint for longevity as opposed to wood, (which will rot in time).

We install concrete dished drains during the construction of the base which takes the water away from the yard and integrated removable silt buckets.

During the construction of the base, ducting for mains services is also laid.

Once the Concrete Base is completed, a single course of engineering bricks is then laid for your building to be sited on, this acts as a dampcourse and helps further protect the timber frame of the buildings.

Other Bases

Horse Walker Bases, Muck Clamps, Driveways, Pathways etc

Size

It was always difficult to capture the sheer scale of some of the concrete bases we had built, until we started using the Drone. By far the largest base we have built was for a Stable Block comprising of 4 No Stables, Tack Room and Corner Barn, an American Barn 10.2m x 7.2m, Muck Clamp and a yard area. Photo below, digger and car for scale!

Construction

There are step by step photos of how we construct our bases in the gallery section of our website, click on the link here.

Note to self: remember to compliment the Contractor on the Concrete Base as well as the Stable Block…

From a Single Stable, to a brand new Equestrian Yard

Equestrian Yard Ideas

“From Conception to Design, through Planning to Construction – with our experienced and knowledgeable Planning and Construction Teams, Campion Equestrian Construction can turn your ideas, large or small, into a quality, aesthetically pleasing build, which we are confident will meet, if not exceed, your expectations”.

Back in 2022, we were delighted to be awarded the job of creating a brand new Equestrian Yard for our Customer. There was an empty field, it was literally a blank canvas!

We worked closely with our Customer during the design stages of the build to ensure we incorporated all our Customers’ requirements, in addition to creating a safe and practical yard. Drawing on our experience, we were able to offer helpful advice and suggestions throughout the design process, enhancing our Customers’ vision.

Once the design stage was completed, the Planning Consultant with whom we work alongside, submitted the planning application on behalf of our Customer. Once planning permission was granted, we were able to commence with the build.

Regular contact with our Customer continued throughout the build and as the yard evolved we were able to make any changes required, as and when they arose, adapting and tweaking as things progressed (we do find seeing the project in real life is often different to seeing the design on paper.)

Providing a quality product for our Customer is our top priority, the high specification of the Stable Block, the quality Concrete Base we laid for the Stables to be sited on (using K forms as opposed to wooden shuttering for longevity), the quality timber we use to construct our Arena’s and the sleeper edged Driveway and Carpark, all contributed to the overall completed look of the finished yard.

The yard comprised of:

  • 20m x 50m Arena
  • 20m x 20m Turnout Pen
  • Stable Block comprising of 4 No. Stables, 1 No. Wash Bay, 2 No. Corner Stores, 1 No. Machinery Store and 1 No. Feed Store
  • Stable Base
  • Yard Area
  • Muck Clamp
  • Car Park
  • Drive
  • Associated Landscaping
  • Post & Rail perimeter and paddock fencing

Photos of the completed yard are in our Gallery under the heading “Brand New Equestrian Yard – Showcase Photos”, to see the photos please click on the link here.

Sponsored Riders

Sponsored Riders

Shout out to our Sponsored Riders in this month’s Blog!

On a few occasions this year we have had the opportunity to be there to watch our Sponsored Riders in person.

So proud watching Rachel Skeffington doing the Dressage Demo at The Essex Young Farmers Show, Roxwell, Chelmsford, Essex, back in May. It’s a fantastic show, made even better having Rachel there.

Back in June, we went to watch Rosie Summers competing at our local venue, Codham Park Equestrian, Nr Braintree, Essex. Rosie and Star actually won the class we are Sponsoring at Codham Park this year, the 80cm Open Pony!

In January we went to watch Megan Biggs competing with Eliza at another local venue, Frenches Farm, Nr Braintree, Essex.

All our Sponsored Riders do an amazing job representing us and they make us very proud.

And finally, a big “Thank you” to Mia Lempriere, who has been competing our very own “Emily Campion” this year.

Well done, Mia, you’ve done a fantastic job, Emily has been living her best life! We hope you have enjoyed it as much as Emily has!
